Stirling Buller Base Camp Hike

Upcoming Dates

These wonderful trips are designed to give the overnight hiker an opportunity to explore beyond the reach of just a day walk, without the anxiety of a long day carrying a heavy rucksack. They involve a pack carry on the first day, then two or three day walks with just your small bag and heading back to  your standing base camp each night. We have a range of destinations available, from the wilds of Tassie to the Victorian High Plains and they are a wonderful opportunity to blend your love of the outdoors and the challenge of a multi-night tent experience without being too far from the safety and security that a base camp can provide.

This particular trip is based in the High Country on Mt Stirling, walking just 7km in with our big packs, setting up a base camp and then doing our longer day walks. We will explore some of the best of our high country mountains, staying high on ridgelines and forest trails, plus taking in the views. But the best thing is by setting up a base camp, we carry daypacks each day and return from our walks tired and hungry to our established camp – bliss! All of this plus the yummy fresh food and the support you have come to expect from Take Shape Adventures.
You don’t necessarily need prior hiking experience but you will need to be ready to sleep in a tent for multiple nights and be able to walk the required distance each day for four days in a row, including two pack carry days. We’d love to see you on this exciting experience to take your day walking or overnight hiking to a new level and head into the wilds with the security of a base camp and our supportive and experienced staff.

Day 1 Day 1
We’ll meet at Telephone box junction on Mt Stirling for a bite to eat and a welcome briefing. We’ll go over gear, distribute food and ensure everyone is set for the four days out. The early afternoon will be a full pack carry of about 7km on some wide open forest trails up to the lovely camping area beside King Spur Hut where we will set up our tents at our base camps and relax. There will be time for an afternoon cup of tea and a wander around.
Day 2 Day 2
Today’s day walk (13km)will set off after breakfast towards the famous Craigs Hut and The Monument. This day out contains a mixture of 4wd track and forest trails and is perfect for a day out. You'll have lunch and snacks on the trail, before returning to our base camp in the afternoon for a rest and a delicious dinner. This walk is a perfect distance to have a day out in the high country with incredible scenery all day.
Day 3 Day 3
Today’s long walk (24km) will take in another mountain, more famous for winter skiing but with equally impressive summer views from the summit of Mt Buller. Head over the open summits and enclosed forest trails on the way there and back. You’ll have another lunch on the trail (maybe get a sneaky coffee) before returning during the late afternoon over the simply stunning open summit of Mt Stirling to the security of your already established base camp and another fantastic hearty dinner.
Day 4 Day 4
Today is pack and go day. We’ll jump out of our sleeping bags with a spring in the step (after three days of walking already!) and pack up tents and gear before starting the mostly downhill 8km route back to the vehicles. This gently graded walk is perfect for those tired legs and lets you take in the last of the wonderful views. A last lunch back at Telephone box junction will give you a chance to reflect on an awesome few days before you make your way back home.

All food is included plus snacks. We prepare all meals before the trip so you won't be eating cardboard, packaged food. We serve hot food for dinners and lunch will be a substantial salad, with some protein and wraps. And, yes, we have coffee (woo hoo). We also provide snacks along the trail, this might be orange slices, lollies, protein balls or lemon slice.
