Warrumbungles

Are you ready for an adventure? Imagine exploring a stunning landscape that was formed by an ancient and truly mighty volcano. Welcome to the Warrumbungles National Park, where you’ll walk in the very centre of a volcano and marvel at its breath taking volcanic extrusions which soar up to create amazing rock pillars.  And that’s just the beginning.

As night falls, get ready for a sky full of stars that will leave you in awe. Warrumbungles National Park was the first listed Dark Sky area in the Australia, which means you can sit up in the evening and stare in wonder at the bright southern sky. We will visit the local Siding Springs Observatory to learn about the sky above (subject to opening hours and tour timings).

We’ll hike up rocky outcrops, through valleys, and explore the crisp early mornings filled with the sounds of birds and the sight of kangaroos. And don’t worry, you’ll be fully supported by our experienced TSA guides and get to sleep in comfort after enjoying home-cooked meals at our accommodation.

But be warned – this trip is for the adventure lover. With uphill hikes and loose rocky terrain, it’s a grade 4 challenge that requires a good level of fitness. But for those who are up for the challenge, the stunning views and unique experiences will make it all worthwhile. Our last day also has travelling back through the hunter valley where we’ll stop for some local cider tasting ( if time permits).

So what are you waiting for? Join us on this thrilling adventure to Warrumbungles National Park and Hunter Valley for an experience you’ll never forget.

Trip Highlights

Itinerary

We begin by picking you up from Newcastle. It’s a long drive today so we’ll stop along the way so you can stretch your legs and then we’ll continue into Coonabarabran for lunch. We’ll have a quick stop at our accommodation to drop bags and then head straight to the trail for our great introductory walk up and around Febar and Macha Tors. This 7km hike will have your legs working and getting you used to the terrain. Being in the Park a little later in the day also allows you to see the changing colors of the towering rock formations.

Today, we’ll explore the Grand High Tops circuit for the whole day. The walk begins with a steady climb up the long stair sections that lead toward the famous Breadknife and the incredible rock formations that line the ridge. From here, we continue along the Grand High Tops trail to Ogma Gap, where there’s an option to take the side trip up Bluff Mountain — a steep, rocky climb that rewards you with breathtaking summit views. After returning to Ogma Gap, we descend via the Spirey Creek Track, following a rocky but scenic route down through the forest to complete the loop.

We head back to the accommodation to relax, have a shower or enjoy a stretch on the grass before dinner.

Today we head back into the Park for two more stunning walks, starting with the Split Rock Circuit for our slowest and rockiest walk. (5kms/4hrs) This walk has an optional ascent to the summit and has spectacular views from many locations around the loop. Today, we also set our sights on the stars with a visit to Siding Springs Observatory, so its a great night to lay on the grass after dinner and stare at the Milky Way.

Up and on the road today for our journey home. We have a few quick coffee stops along the way and a short and rocky leg stretch walk at lunch. Heading to the Hunter Valley to the Pokolbin Cidery for a cider tasting or just enjoy a cup of tea on us, we might sneak next door for some chocolate as well, before finishing the drive into Newcastle Airport and your drop off.

Depending on timings and flights, we may head to Newcastle Beach for a short walk before the airport.
